FINNISH PHONE FIRM Nokia rolled out another software fix for its Lumia 800 handset yesterday designed to appease angry users complaining that the phone's battery performance is not as good as claimed.

Nokia's third software update for the Lumia 800, version 1600.2487.8107.12070 brings what the company described as "significant improvements" in battery performance and power management. Originally targeted for 18 April, the update seems to have been rolled out ahead the schedule.

"We've heard your feedback and comments: better battery performance is what you really want. And that's exactly what you'll get. We put the software through rigorous tests, and what came out was an update that shows significant improvements in battery life, whether it's for talk time in 3G networks, browsing over WiFi, music playback, or simply, the overall usage time," the firm reported on its Conversations by Nokia blog.

This came not a moment too soon, it would appear.

On the same Nokia blog, Lumina 800 owner 'strong-beef' complained yesterday, "There must be a huge problem with the 3G radio as it still drains incredibly fast when just in standby, somewhere between 2-5 [per cent] per hour. This is only with one push email and two live tiles, Wifi/Bluetooth etc off, with nothing else running in the background.

"I've noticed the battery percentage behaving strangely too, e.g. one minute it's at 30 per cent but the next it's gone back up to 37 per cent. While I do appreciate the updates being released, there are still major problems four months after release, this is unacceptable Nokia and it needs to be fixed!"

Posting on the Nokia web site this morning, Benedikt Rottstegge reported, "Collapse Expand Same with me, just got my Lumia 800 on Monday. I did an update yesterday an now I have 1600.2487.8107.12070 installed. But still I notice a very fast drain of the battery. I only got two mail accounts via push and one life tile, no bluetooth and I am not any kind of hardcore user. What to do??"

Along with battery improvements, the software update has also improved bass in the audio and ensured that the soft keys illuminate at the brightness level settings. Additional features including WiFi tethering are "on the way" in future software updates, the phone maker added.

Nokia explained that the software update will not span the globe all at once, but rather will be queued up over a month, beginning yesterday for the first batch. Subsequent phased updates will be on 4, 11 and 18 April.

This third software refresh for the Lumia 800 smartphone comes after the first one last December and a second in January, as we reported at the time. µ
